Students begin by reviewing addition and subtraction without regrouping before learning to regroup through concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations. They use base ten blocks, place value drawings, 120 charts, expanded form, and the standard algorithm to solve problems within 120 while developing a deep understanding of place value and why regrouping works. Students also learn to select and defend the strategy that best fits a given problem, solve real-world addition and subtraction word problems that require regrouping, and determine whether to add or subtract based on the context of a situation. This unit contains 23 lessons, multiple hands-on center activities, strategy practice, collaborative problem-solving tasks, and a community-based project in which students organize an animal shelter supply drive while applying their addition and subtraction skills to meaningful, real-world situations.
