The skill guides are intentionally designed for you, the teacher, to guide learners through each skill focus and include a clear lesson goal, materials list, skill description and rationale, connections to future learning in Good at Math® Kindergarten, whole group practice, centers, games, and shelf work, movement and fine motor integration, and play. Good at Math® Foundations was created by an experienced early childhood educator and refined through real classroom and homeschool use to ensure it meets the developmental needs of preschool and pre-kindergarten learners. Students continue exploring numbers individually while expanding their understanding that numerals represent specific amounts regardless of how objects are arranged. As they progress through the unit, students practice counting collections within 10, building sets to match a given quantity, matching numerals to a variety of representations, and comparing groups to determine which has more, less, or the same amount. Students also strengthen their understanding of numbers through subitizing activities, ten frames, fingers, dot patterns, cubes, movement, dramatic play, and hands-on exploration. By encountering numbers in meaningful, real-world contexts, children begin developing a deeper understanding of quantity, comparison, and number relationships. This unit supports the development of one-to-one correspondence, counting accuracy, quantity recognition, subitizing, visual discrimination, number identification, comparison skills, observation, and early mathematical reasoning while continuing to build a strong foundation for future operations and place value concepts. Within each skill focus, students are introduced to new concepts, practice them through whole group and movement-based experiences, engage in centers and shelf work, and demonstrate understanding through meaningful independent application.
