1st Grade Writing Scribbles to Stories® Unit 1: Memoirs Personal Narrative

Scribbles to Stories® is a 9 unit 1st Grade writing curriculum for classroom and homeschool learning environments. It can be used in a workshop model setting, as shared writing, in structured literacy programs, in small groups, or as independent writing. Each unit comes with detailed daily lesson plans, mentor text guide with diverse and inclusive titles, student reference posters and anchor charts, writing paper options, check lists, graphic organizers, certificate, and classroom library bin label. The detailed lesson plans include a title, lesson goals to use for I Can statements, materials list, scripted portions, explicit instruction directions, and reflection invitations. Scribbles to Stories® is a comprehensive curriculum designed by a veteran teacher, tested, tweaked, and perfected through countless years of use and hundreds of students taught. The lessons and materials are designed using Universal Design for Learning to best meet the needs of a diverse student population.

Unit 1: Memoirs and Personal Narratives I Can Tell My Story introduces memoir writing in a student-centered, engaging, and easy-to-digest way. Students will explore how authors turn real-life experiences into meaningful stories by collecting memories, choosing small moments, and organizing events in sequence. Using mentor texts, graphic organizers, checklists, and targeted lesson prompts, students will learn to write strong beginnings and endings, stretch important moments with descriptive details, incorporate dialogue, and show thoughts and feelings through their writing. Throughout the unit, students will plan, draft, revise, edit, and illustrate their very own memoir books while developing their confidence as authors. At the end of the unit, students will celebrate their accomplishments by publishing their memoirs and sharing their personal stories with an audience.
