Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Dreamers by Yuyi Morales
This week, students will read and explore Dreamers by Yuyi Morales as they follow a mother and child’s journey to a new country and discover how stories, imagination, and resilience help them find a sense of belonging. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on visualizing events in the story and identifying the sequence of important moments. Learners will explore themes of courage, identity, and perseverance while recognizing how new experiences help shape who we become. Students will also read The Suitcase by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros as a connected text, comparing how both characters navigate unfamiliar experiences and work toward finding acceptance and belonging.
Each Belonging in Books unit is built around a high-quality read-aloud and carefully designed to:
