Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Dumpling Soup by Jama Kim Rattigan
This week, students will read and explore Dumpling Soup by Jama Kim Rattigan as they learn about family traditions, cultural identity, and the meaningful role food plays in bringing generations together. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying the central theme of a story while making meaningful connections between texts, personal experiences, and family celebrations. Learners will discover that preparing and sharing traditional foods can help preserve cultural heritage, create lasting memories, and strengthen a sense of belonging. Students will also read A Big Mooncake for Little Star by Grace Lin as a connected text, exploring cultural connections through food, storytelling, and family relationships.
