Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns by Hena Khan
This week, students will read and explore Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns by Hena Khan as they learn about Islamic traditions, cultural symbols, family celebrations, and the meaningful objects and practices that are part of Muslim life. Through discussion, vocabulary, and text analysis, students will focus on identifying text features and using descriptive details to locate and understand important information. Learners will discover how colors, clothing, foods, and special traditions can represent cultural identity and help families express their beliefs and values. Students will also read Halal Hot Dogs by Susannah Aziz as a connected text, exploring family traditions, community gatherings, and the ways food and shared experiences bring people together.
