Unit 5: Word Problems within 100 builds a strong foundation for solving and creating real-world addition and subtraction problems through hands-on problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and flexible thinking. Students learn how to analyze word problems by identifying important information, determining the operation needed, and representing their thinking with equations, models, drawings, and written answers. Throughout the unit, students explore a wide variety of problem types including addition, subtraction, comparison, missing number, and multi-step word problems within 100. They also strengthen their understanding by crafting their own word problems to match equations and solving problems using multiple strategies such as counting on, counting back, bar models, related facts, and place value reasoning. Students compare quantities using “how many more” and “how many fewer” language, solve 2-digit addition and subtraction word problems without regrouping, and explain and defend their mathematical thinking through discussion and modeling. Throughout the unit, students engage with hands-on manipulatives, visual models, number representations, cooperative learning activities, and meaningful math conversations to deepen conceptual understanding and problem-solving confidence. This unit contains 12 lessons, a wide range of center activities, strategy-based practice tasks, no prep practice, and fluency-building opportunities designed to reinforce and extend learning. An end of unit assessment is included to help inform instruction, intervention, and next steps.
In Good at Math® First Grade, each unit ends with a mini Project Based Learning unit that spans multiple days and requires students to use all skills gained within the unit to solve a real world problem and/or contribute to their community in a meaningful way. All planning, execution, and reflection pages are included as well as a full, detailed unit plan.
With Good at Math® you can take the guesswork out of your math block and know that you are providing a developmentally appropriate and sequenced math program for your learners.
