Kindergarten Writing Scribbles to Stories® Unit 4: I Can Write Sentences

Scribbles to Stories® is a 10 unit kindergarten writing curriculum for classroom and homeschool learning environments. It can be used in a workshop model setting, as shared writing, in structured literacy programs, in small groups, or as independent writing. Each unit comes with detailed daily lesson plans, mentor text guide with diverse and inclusive titles, student reference posters and anchor charts, writing paper options, check lists, graphic organizers, certificate, and classroom library bin label. The detailed lesson plans include a title, lesson goals to use for I Can statements, materials list, scripted portions, explicit instruction directions, and reflection invitations. Scribbles to Stories® is a comprehensive curriculum designed by a veteran kindergarten teacher, tested, tweaked, and perfected through countless years of use and hundreds of students taught. The lessons and materials are designed using Universal Design for Learning to best meet the needs of a diverse student population.

Unit 4: I Can Write Sentences builds upon students' beginning encoding skills and use of high frequency words, and moves them from writing phrases into writing sentences. Throughout this unit, students will begin to write entire sentences to write multi-page stories adding high frequency words, encoding phonetically, and adding emotion words. Students will use tools like speech bubbles, story mapping organizers, and checklists to develop their writing as well as learn to use essential sentence writing rules such as a capital first letter, finger spaces, and a period at the end of a sentence. Through vivid text examples and targeted lesson prompts, students will develop their skills as a budding author. They will continue their quality illustration skills from Unit 1, their phoneme isolation skills from Unit 2, and their beginning decoding and word writing from Unit 3 as they learn how to write about the important details of a story, touch and reread their story in chronological order, use multiple writing tools to improve their writing, and use an editing and revision checklist to publish a book and through a launch party!
