This week, students will read and explore Mango, Abuela, and Me by Meg Medina as they follow Mia and her grandmother as they learn to communicate and connect despite speaking different languages. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on making predictions and identifying how characters’ feelings and relationships change throughout the story. Learners will explore themes of family, communication, and belonging while recognizing how patience and effort help build meaningful connections. Students will also read Between Us and Abuelaby Mitali Perkins as a connected text, comparing how both stories show the importance of family bonds and overcoming challenges to stay connected.
