Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay by Cari Best
This week, students will read and explore My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay by Cari Best as they follow a determined girl who is blind and prepares to run in her school’s field day race. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying character motivations and understanding how perseverance helps characters reach their goals. Learners will explore themes of friendship, determination, and believing in yourself while recognizing that everyone may approach challenges differently.
