This week, students will read and explore The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson as they follow characters who feel different or unsure and discover the courage it takes to share their stories and connect with others. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying the main idea, supporting details, and the problem and solution in the story. Learners will explore themes of courage, belonging, and acceptance while recognizing how sharing our experiences helps us build connections with others. Students will also read Say My Name by Joanna Ho as a connected text, comparing how both stories emphasize the importance of identity, voice, and embracing what makes each person unique.
