Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
The Night of Las Posadas by Tomie dePaola
This week, students will read and explore The Night of Las Posadas by Tomie dePaola as they learn about Las Posadas, Mexican Christmas traditions, community celebrations, and the importance of kindness and helping others. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on visualization while examining how illustrations and descriptive details establish the setting and bring cultural celebrations to life. Learners will discover how music, costumes, processions, and shared traditions help communities celebrate their heritage and strengthen connections with one another. Students will also read Clatter Bash! by Richard Keep as a connected text, exploring another Mexican cultural celebration, Día de los Muertos, and the ways families honor traditions, remember loved ones, and celebrate together.
