Belonging in Books Unit 11 Bundle: Being a Good Friend
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using 8 powerful anchor texts:
A Sick Day for Amos McGee — Philip C. Stead
Be Kind — Pat Zietlow Miller
Bear and Wolf — Daniel Salmieri
Bear Came Along — Richard T. Morris
Enemy Pie — Derek Munson
Strictly No Elephants — Lisa Mantchev
The Friend Ship — Kat Yeh
We Found a Hat — Jon Klassen
This bundle of books focuses on the theme of friendship, helping students explore what it means to be kind, inclusive, supportive, and caring toward others. Throughout this unit, students will focus on identifying characters, describing major events, making connections, analyzing character motivations, and understanding how relationships develop and change over time. As students engage with both fiction and connected texts, they will practice important comprehension skills such as making predictions, visualizing, summarizing, identifying story structure, analyzing character actions and feelings, and making meaningful text-to-self and text-to-text connections. By exploring stories about kindness, acceptance, teamwork, empathy, conflict resolution, fairness, and belonging, students will build social-emotional awareness while developing a deeper understanding that strong friendships are built through understanding, respect, compassion, and shared experiences.
