Belonging in Books Unit 13 Bundle: Helping and Caring for Others
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using 6 powerful anchor texts:
- A Hat for Mrs. Goldman — Michelle Edwards
- Bear Feels Scared — Karma Wilson
- Extra Yarn — Mac Barnett
- The Kindest Red — Ibtihaj Muhammad
- The Together Tree — Aisha Saeed
- Willow and Bunny — Anita Rowe Schulte
This bundle of books focuses on the theme of helping and caring for others, encouraging students to explore how kindness, compassion, empathy, generosity, and inclusion can make a positive difference in the lives of those around them. Throughout this unit, students will focus on identifying character feelings and motivations, describing story settings, recognizing cause-and-effect relationships, analyzing problems and solutions, summarizing key events, and making meaningful text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections. As students engage with both fiction and thoughtfully paired companion texts, they will practice important comprehension skills such as making predictions, sequencing events, analyzing character development, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text and illustrations. By exploring stories about friendship, courage, generosity, belonging, service, and community, students will strengthen both their reading comprehension and their social-emotional understanding while discovering that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact on others.
