Belonging in Books Unit 15 Bundle: Nature & Our World
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using 7 powerful anchor texts:
Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn — Kenard Pak
In a Jar — Deborah Marcero
Over and Under the Snow — Kate Messner
The Curious Garden — Peter Brown
The Hike — Alison Farrell
The Night Gardener — Terry Fan & Eric Fan
The Storm Whale — Benji Davies
This bundle of books focuses on the theme of nature and our world, encouraging students to explore the beauty, wonder, and interconnectedness of the environment while developing a deeper appreciation for the plants, animals, seasons, ecosystems, and relationships that shape the world around them. Throughout this unit, students will focus on identifying main ideas and supporting details, analyzing character traits and growth, exploring cause-and-effect relationships, summarizing important events, visualizing descriptive details, comparing and contrasting texts, and making meaningful text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections. As students engage with both fiction and thoughtfully paired companion texts, they will practice important comprehension skills such as identifying themes, analyzing character development, sequencing events, examining different points of view, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text and illustrations. By exploring stories about changing seasons, hidden ecosystems, gardening, exploration, creativity, memory, friendship, and caring for both people and the environment, students will strengthen both their reading comprehension and their understanding of the natural world while discovering that curiosity, observation, and meaningful connections can help them better understand both nature and themselves.
