Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds

If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:

What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada

This week, students will read and explore What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada as they learn about courage, resilience, and facing challenges with confidence. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying a character's feelings and motivations while discovering how those feelings change throughout the story to reveal its central lesson. Learners will explore how avoiding problems often makes them feel bigger, while facing them can lead to growth, confidence, and new opportunities. Students will also read After the Fall by Dan Santat as a connected text, exploring how perseverance, bravery, and a willingness to try again can help us overcome fear and discover new possibilities.
