This week, students will read and explore Brave Ballerina: The Story of Janet Collins by Michelle Meadows as they learn about Janet Collins’ determination to overcome barriers and pursue her dream of becoming a professional ballerina. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying the main idea and key details while examining the obstacles Janet faced. Learners will explore themes of courage, resilience, and standing up for what is right. Students will also read Firebird by Misty Copeland as a connected text, comparing how both stories highlight perseverance and breaking barriers in the arts.
