Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Compost Stew by Mary McKenna Siddals
This week, students will read and explore Compost Stew by Mary McKenna Siddals as they learn how everyday food scraps and natural materials can be turned into something helpful for the Earth. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on predicting outcomes and understanding the sequence of events as ingredients change over time. Learners will explore themes of responsibility, environmental care, and making thoughtful choices while recognizing how their actions impact the world around them. Students will also read What If Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick as a connected text, exploring how individual choices can lead to positive or negative outcomes for the Earth and their community.
