Counting on Katherine by Helaine Becker

This week, students will read and explore Counting on Katherine by Helaine Becker as they learn about Katherine Johnson’s love of math and her important contributions to space exploration. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on making inferences about character feelings and sequencing key events in her life. Learners will explore themes of curiosity, determination, and using talents to help others. Students will also read Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty as a connected text, comparing how both characters demonstrate curiosity and persistence in STEM fields.
