Fact Family Daily Number Talks | No Prep

Use this number talk routine to warm up your math lesson and build number sense.

• Introduce the target number for the day.
• Give students time to show different ways to make that number in the space provided.
• Students can respond based on their level:
  • Write equations (e.g., 3 + 2 = 5)
  • Draw objects (e.g., 5 hearts)
  • Use subtraction or multi-step equations (e.g., 2 + 2 + 1)
  • Try repeated addition (e.g., 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1)
• Encourage students to show multiple representations.

After the activity:

• Compile their answers on a class poster or shared space.
• Highlight fact families (e.g., 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 2 = 5, 5 − 3 = 2, 5 − 2 = 3).
• Let students pick one equation and complete its fact family.

This resource includes ready-to-use pages for numbers 1–20. You can reuse them as students improve their understanding and representation of numbers.
