The lessons and materials are designed using Universal Design for Learning to best meet the needs of a diverse student population.
Unit 10: Money Part 2 builds upon students’ foundational understanding of coins, bills, and money values by extending their skills into coin equivalencies, counting mixed money, comparing amounts, and real-world financial problem solving. Students begin by reviewing the names and values of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and common dollar bills before exploring relationships between coins and learning how to exchange different combinations of money for equal values. They practice representing the same amount in multiple ways, selecting efficient coin combinations, and counting collections of mixed coins and bills. As the unit progresses, students learn to compare money amounts, determine whether they have enough money to make a purchase, calculate how much money remains after spending, and find missing amounts needed to reach a target value. Students then apply these understandings to solve increasingly complex money word problems, including multi-step challenges that encourage mathematical reasoning and strategic thinking. The unit culminates in an applied learning experience that gives students an opportunity to use money skills in a meaningful, real-world context. This unit contains 13 instructional lessons, multiple hands-on center activities, money games, collaborative learning tasks, no-prep independent practice, bonus practice activities, a mini PBL unit, and an end-of-unit assessment to inform instruction, intervention, and next steps.
Prerequisite Note: This unit is a continuation of Good at Math® Kindergarten Unit 13: Intro to Money and builds directly upon the foundational concepts and skills introduced in that unit. Good at Math® Kindergarten Unit 13 is a prerequisite for this unit and should be completed before beginning First Grade Unit 10.
In Good at Math® First Grade, each unit ends with a mini Project Based Learning unit that spans multiple days and requires students to use all skills gained within the unit to solve a real world problem and/or contribute to their community in a meaningful way. All planning, execution, and reflection pages are included as well as a full, detailed unit plan.
With Good at Math® you can take the guesswork out of your math block and know that you are providing a developmentally appropriate and sequenced math program for your learners.
