The lessons and materials are designed using Universal Design for Learning to best meet the needs of a diverse student population.
Unit 9: Data, Graphing, & Analyzation builds upon students’ foundational understanding of collecting and representing data by extending graphing skills into scaled representations, data analysis, comparison, and real-world problem solving. Students begin by asking data questions and collecting accurate information before learning to organize data using tally graphs and pictorial graphs. They explore picture graphs and keys, progressing from one-to-one representations to scaled graphs in which each picture represents 2, 5, or 10, strengthening connections between graphing, skip counting, and number sense. As the unit progresses, students create and interpret bar graphs using different scales and learn to read across tally, pictorial, picture, and bar graphs to identify totals, compare categories, and determine how many more or fewer. Students then apply addition and subtraction to solve data problems, determine missing quantities, evaluate whether conclusions are supported by a graph, identify and correct errors in graphs, and choose appropriate ways to represent different sets of data. The unit culminates in a mini PBL experience in which students collect, graph, and analyze real-world waste data and use their findings to develop and evaluate a solution for reducing waste at school or home. This unit contains 10 lessons, multiple hands-on graphing centers, collaborative learning tasks, graphing games and task cards, no-prep independent practice, bonus practice activities, a mini PBL unit, and an end-of-unit assessment to inform instruction, intervention, and next steps.
In Good at Math® First Grade, each unit ends with a mini Project Based Learning unit that spans multiple days and requires students to use all skills gained within the unit to solve a real world problem and/or contribute to their community in a meaningful way. All planning, execution, and reflection pages are included as well as a full, detailed unit plan.
With Good at Math® you can take the guesswork out of your math block and know that you are providing a developmentally appropriate and sequenced math program for your learners.
