Kindergarten Writing Curriculum Scribbles to Stories® Unit 2: I Can Label

Scribbles to Stories® is a 10 unit kindergarten writing curriculum for classroom and homeschool learning environments. It can be used in a workshop model setting, as shared writing, in structured literacy programs, in small groups, or as independent writing. Each unit comes with detailed daily lesson plans, mentor text guide with diverse and inclusive titles, student reference posters and anchor charts, writing paper options, check lists, graphic organizers, certificate, and classroom library bin label. The detailed lesson plans include a title, lesson goals to use for I Can statements, materials list, scripted portions, explicit instruction directions, and reflection invitations. Scribbles to Stories® is a comprehensive curriculum designed by a veteran kindergarten teacher, tested, tweaked, and perfected through countless years of use and hundreds of students taught. The lessons and materials are designed using Universal Design for Learning to best meet the needs of a diverse student population.

Unit 2: I Can Label builds upon students illustration skills and begins the journey of phonetic spelling. Before students can begin to write words and sentences, they need to be able to hear and isolate phonemes. Throughout this unit students will begin to label elements of their illustrations with the initial phoneme, and eventually build to initial and final phoneme labeling details with 2 letters. Through vivid text examples and targeted lesson prompts, students will develop their skills as a budding author. They will not only continue their quality illustration skills form Unit 1, but also learn how to label important details of a story, touch and retell their story in chronological order, use questioning strategies to improve their writing, use an editing and revision checklist, how to plan, write, revise, and publish a story, and throw a book launch party to celebrate their success!
