This week, students will read and explore Koala Lou by Mem Fox as they follow Koala Lou’s efforts to gain her mother’s attention and reassurance. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will identify the problem Koala Lou faces, how she tries to solve it, and how her feelings and motivations change throughout the story. Learners will build empathy and emotional awareness while exploring themes of love, belonging, and understanding that they are valued just as they are. Students will also read Owen by Kevin Henkes as a connected text, comparing the characters’ problems and solutions and exploring how family support helps both characters feel secure and loved.
