Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds

If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:

Not So Different by Shane Burcaw

This week, students will read and explore Not So Different by Shane Burcaw as they learn about the author’s life growing up with spinal muscular atrophy. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on distinguishing between fact and opinion and asking questions to better understand the text. Learners will explore themes of acceptance, empathy, and recognizing both similarities and differences among people. Students will also read We’re All Wonders by R.J. Palacio as a connected text, thinking about how kindness and understanding can help everyone feel valued and included.

Each Belonging in Books unit is built around a high-quality read-aloud and carefully designed to:
