Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds

If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:

This week, students will read and explore Stellaluna by Janell Cannon as they follow Stellaluna’s experience of being separated from her mother and trying to adapt to life with a family of birds. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will practice retelling the story in order and identifying the theme by examining key events and illustrations. Learners will build empathy and self-awareness while exploring themes of friendship, belonging, and understanding that differences do not prevent meaningful connections. Students will also read Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson as a connected text, comparing the characters’ experiences of separation and reunion and exploring how both stories highlight comfort, belonging, and the importance of being yourself.

Each Belonging in Books unit is built around a high-quality read-aloud and carefully designed to:
