Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds

If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:

The Floating Field by Scott Riley

This week, students will read and explore The Floating Field by Scott Riley as they learn how a group of boys used creativity and engineering to build a floating soccer field so they could play the game they loved. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on sequencing and summarizing key events while identifying how the characters worked together to solve a problem. Learners will explore themes of teamwork, innovation, and perseverance while recognizing how engineers design solutions to real-world challenges. Students will also read Mr. Ferris and His Wheel by Kathryn Gibbs Davis as a connected text, comparing how engineers use creativity and persistence to build something new.

Each Belonging in Books unit is built around a high-quality read-aloud and carefully designed to:
