Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
The Mermaid with No Tail by Jessica Long
This week, students will read and explore The Mermaid with No Tail by Jessica Long as they follow Tatiana, a mermaid who feels different from the others until she discovers new ways to move and belong. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying character feelings and motivations using picture clues and story events. Learners will explore themes of resilience, friendship, and embracing differences while recognizing that challenges can lead to new possibilities. Students will also read All the Way to the Top by Annette Bay Pimentel as a connected text, learning how determination and advocacy can create change and help everyone participate.
