If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
The Rabbit and the Shadow by Mélanie Rutten
This week, students will read and explore The Rabbit and the Shadow by Mélanie Rutten as they learn about friendship, courage, kindness, and the importance of understanding and supporting others through challenging experiences. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying the central theme while examining how characters change and grow throughout the story. Learners will discover that empathy, compassion, and meaningful relationships can help individuals overcome fears, develop confidence, and find a sense of belonging. Students will also read The Story of the Kindness Elves by Anna Ranson as a connected text, exploring how thoughtful actions, generosity, and everyday acts of kindness can strengthen relationships and bring happiness to others.
