This bundle of books focuses on the theme of traditions and celebrations around the world, encouraging students to explore the diverse cultures, customs, holidays, and family traditions that shape communities while developing a deeper appreciation for cultural identity, heritage, and belonging. Throughout this unit, students will focus on identifying main ideas and supporting details, analyzing character feelings and growth, exploring cause-and-effect relationships, sequencing and retelling events, visualizing descriptive details, identifying author’s purpose, comparing and contrasting texts, and making meaningful text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections. As students engage with both fiction and thoughtfully paired companion texts, they will practice important comprehension skills such as identifying central themes, examining story elements, determining important information, analyzing character experiences, recognizing text features, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text and illustrations. By exploring stories about Diwali, Lunar New Year, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, the winter solstice, Indigenous traditions, cultural foods, family celebrations, and meaningful customs from around the world, students will strengthen both their reading comprehension and their understanding of the many ways people celebrate, connect, and preserve their cultural heritage. Through these diverse stories, learners will discover that while traditions and celebrations may look different across families and communities, they often share common values of love, gratitude, kindness, generosity, togetherness, and belonging, helping students develop empathy, cultural awareness, and respect for the experiences and identities of others.
