Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
The Water Princess by Susan Verde
This week, students will read and explore The Water Princess by Susan Verde as they learn about water accessibility, perseverance, and the challenges faced by communities without reliable access to clean water. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying cause-and-effect relationships while examining the problems characters face and the solutions they hope to find. Learners will discover that clean water is an essential resource and develop empathy for individuals whose daily experiences differ from their own. Students will also read The Water Walker by Joanne Robertson as a connected text, exploring environmental advocacy and how determination, community action, and respect for natural resources can inspire meaningful change.
