If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using 8 powerful anchor texts:
Change Sings — Amanda Gorman
I Am Martin Luther King, Jr. — Brad Meltzer
Lubna and Pebble — Wendy Meddour
Nasreen’s Secret School — Jeanette Winter
Peaceful Fights for Equal Rights — Rob Sanders
Ron’s Big Mission — Rose Blue & Corinne Naden
The Water Princess — Susan Verde
Wangari’s Trees of Peace — Jeanette Winter
This bundle of books focuses on the theme of peace, justice, and advocacy, encouraging students to explore the importance of fairness, equality, compassion, courage, and using their voices and actions to create positive change in their communities and the world. Throughout this unit, students will focus on identifying main ideas and supporting details, analyzing character feelings and motivations, exploring cause-and-effect relationships, identifying problems and solutions, visualizing story details, examining author’s purpose, and recognizing central themes and important lessons. As students engage with both fiction and thoughtfully paired companion texts, they will practice important comprehension skills such as analyzing character actions, identifying key details in biographies, exploring persuasive language and opinions, comparing related ideas across texts, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text and illustrations. By exploring stories about civil rights, peaceful protest, access to education, environmental advocacy, clean water, displacement, friendship, and standing up against injustice, students will strengthen both their reading comprehension and their understanding of the diverse experiences and challenges faced by people around the world while discovering that empathy, perseverance, cooperation, and even small acts of courage can contribute to a more peaceful, equitable, and compassionate world.
