Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Wangari’s Trees of Peace by Jeanette Winter
This week, students will read and explore Wangari’s Trees of Peace by Jeanette Winter as they learn about environmental conservation, perseverance, and the importance of protecting the natural world. Through discussion, vocabulary, and text analysis, students will focus on identifying the main idea and key details of a biography while examining how Wangari Maathai’s actions helped bring positive change to her community. Learners will discover that small actions, when combined with determination and cooperation, can grow into meaningful efforts that benefit people and the environment. Students will also read Planting the Trees of Kenya by Claire A. Nivola as a connected text, exploring how environmental stewardship, community involvement, and a commitment to restoring nature can create lasting change.
