Good at Math® First Grade Unit 8: Telling Time Pt2

Good at Math® First Grade is a 12 unit 1st Grade math curriculum for classroom and homeschool learning environments. Each unit comes with detailed daily lesson plans, posters, teaching tools, anchor chart elements, games, center materials, independent practice, no prep printables, end of unit assessment, a Mini PBL unit, and bonus practice materials for additional skill exposure. The detailed lesson plans include a title, postable lesson goal, lesson materials list, warm up fluency practice that spirals, direct teaching, group/tandem practice that includes hands on and movement based skill practice, individual/partner/small group exploration, center activities, individual practice, and national first grade standard alignment. Good at Math® is a comprehensive curriculum designed by a veteran teacher, tested, tweaked, and perfected through countless years of use and hundreds of students taught. The lessons and materials are designed using Universal Design for Learning to best meet the needs of a diverse student population.

Unit 8: Telling Time Part 2 builds upon students’ foundational understanding of clocks and time by extending time-telling skills into ordering events, elapsed time, and real-world problem solving. Students begin by reviewing the purpose and parts of analog and digital clocks before strengthening their ability to read, write, and represent time to the hour and half hour. They explore how the hour and minute hands move clockwise as time passes and connect this movement to intervals of 30 and 60 minutes. As the unit progresses, students learn to order times and daily events from earliest to latest, distinguish between a.m. and p.m., and use time vocabulary such as earlier, later, before, after, noon, and midnight. Students then apply these understandings to determine elapsed time to the half hour and hour, find times before and after a given time, and solve a variety of time-telling word problems. The unit culminates in an applied learning experience that gives students an opportunity to use time skills in a meaningful context. This unit contains 10 lessons, multiple hands-on center activities, clock games, collaborative learning tasks, no-prep independent practice, bonus practice activities, a mini PBL unit, and an end-of-unit assessment to inform instruction, intervention, and next steps.

Prerequisite Note: This unit is a continuation of Good at Math® Kindergarten Unit 14: Telling Time and builds directly upon the foundational concepts and skills introduced in that unit. Good at Math® Kindergarten Unit 14 is a prerequisite for this unit and should be completed before beginning First Grade Unit 8.

In Good at Math® First Grade, each unit ends with a mini Project Based Learning unit that spans multiple days and requires students to use all skills gained within the unit to solve a real world problem and/or contribute to their community in a meaningful way. All planning, execution, and reflection pages are included as well as a full, detailed unit plan.
