Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds

If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:

Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Meddour

This week, students will read and explore Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Meddour as they learn about friendship, compassion, displacement, and the importance of finding comfort and connection during difficult times. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on identifying character feelings and motivations while examining how a character’s actions contribute to the story’s central theme. Learners will discover that empathy, generosity, and friendship can provide hope and a sense of belonging, even in unfamiliar circumstances. Students will also read Lost and Found Cat by Doug Kuntz as a connected text, exploring the experiences of refugee families and the powerful bonds of love, kindness, and perseverance.
