This week, students will read and explore My Name Is Yoon by Helen Recorvits as they follow Yoon’s journey of adjusting to a new country and learning to accept her identity and name. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on making inferences about character feelings and identifying character traits using clues from the text and illustrations. Learners will explore themes of identity, belonging, and self-acceptance while recognizing the importance of honoring who they are. Students will also read Your Name Is a Song by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow as a connected text, comparing how both stories celebrate names, identity, and cultural pride.
