Belonging in Books Unit 6 Bundle: Careers, Community Helpers, and Role Models
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using 7 powerful anchor texts:
A Walk in the Words by Hudson Talbott
I Talk Like a River by Jordan Scott
Listen by Shannon Stocker
My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay by Cari Best
Not So Different by Shane Burcaw
The Mermaid with No Tail by Jessica Long
We Move Together by Kelly Fritsch
This bundle of books focuses on the theme of celebrating differences, helping students explore how people experience the world in unique ways and why those differences matter in building strong, caring communities. Throughout this unit, students will focus on understanding how characters respond to challenges, identifying cause-and-effect relationships, and recognizing the author’s purpose in sharing stories about identity, accessibility, and belonging. As students engage with both fiction and nonfiction texts, they will practice key comprehension skills such as identifying character feelings and motivations, asking and answering questions about a text, distinguishing between fact and opinion, and analyzing how events in a story lead to meaningful change. By exploring stories about individuals with different abilities, learning styles, and perspectives, students will build empathy, strengthen their understanding of inclusion, and develop respect for the many ways people move, learn, communicate, and contribute to their communities.
