  • Unit 5: Decomposing Numbers to 10

    Unit 5: Decomposing to 10
This introductory unit to operations helps children understand how numbers can be broken apart and combined in meaningful ways. Students will explore how two parts make a whole using models like “___ and ___ make ___” and learn to solve problems through drawings, manipulatives, and verbal number sentences. They'll also tackle missing addend problems (a gateway to subtraction) and story problems, all without using operational symbols just yet. Instead, the focus is on building the conceptual understanding behind addition and subtraction. Unit 5 includes 16 rich lessons (many spanning multiple days), plus ample hands-on and independent activities to revisit and reinforce key ideas. It builds directly upon the counting and number recognition work from Units 2 and 3.

  • Unit 6: Numbers 11-20 Teen Numbers

    Unit 6: Numbers 11-20
This unit shifts students into working with teen numbers, offering focused practice with identifying, counting, writing, and understanding numbers 11–20. Students will encounter multiple representations of these numbers while learning how to count accurately using one-to-one correspondence. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the value and structure of teen numbers, especially the idea of “ten and some more.” Daily lessons incorporate spiral review to ensure that students retain and build on previous knowledge. With 9 structured lessons and a range of centers and individual tasks, this unit continues the sequence of Units 2 and 3 and provides a strong bridge to deeper number understanding.
