Is my child ready for Kindergarten?

We’ll help you decide if your child is ready for the Project Based Kindergarten experience, so you and your learner can feel confident in your journey together.

Project Based Kindergarten is best for:

  • Children ages 5+ who have prior academic or structured learning experience.
  • Families planning on going into first grade following this membership year.
  • Learners ready to quickly review letters and numbers and dive right into learning to read, spell, write, and do basic operations.
  • Families with at least 3 hours of time set aside 4 days a week to complete lessons in all core subject areas.

This is a complete kindergarten year that completes all requirements for moving on to first grade in all public, private, charter, online, or homeschool programs.

What Your Child Will Learn

Our curriculum nurtures the whole child—academically, socially, and creatively—through meaningful, standards-aligned, project-based learning

Math

Build a strong math foundation by learning to count to 100, recognize and compare numbers, and understand simple addition and subtraction. They will also explore shapes, patterns, measurement, and begin to grasp place value with numbers 11–19. Through hands-on activities, they classify objects, solve word problems, and connect math to the world around them.

Phonological Awareness

Build a solid foundation for phonics using science of reading aligned lessons that teach how to hear, identify, and manipulate the sounds in spoken words. They practice rhyming, syllable counting, and isolating beginning, middle, and ending sounds. These skills build the foundation for strong reading and spelling as they begin to blend and segment words by sound.

Phonics

Aligned to the science of reading and the most recent research, your child will learn their letters and how to use them to read and spell using systematic and explicit lessons! They will decode and encode (read and spell) words with short and long vowels, blends, digraphs, magic/silent e spelling patterns, and sight words (also known as high frequency words, heart words, trick words, red words, etc.)

Reading Comprehension

Engaging with a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, they learn to ask and answer questions about the text, retell key events, identify characters, settings, and major events, compare and contrast, make text connections, predictions, and inferences, and have discussions about their reading. These skills help them make sense of what they hear and read, laying the groundwork for thoughtful, engaged reading.

Language

Learn to express ideas clearly, follow multi-step directions, take turns in topic specific conversations, and expand their vocabulary. They will begin learning basic grammar by using and identifying simple parts of speech like nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They will practice forming complete sentences, using correct capitalization and punctuation, and understanding the difference between singular and plural nouns.

Writing

Kindergartners will become passionate authors and illustrators that write a variety of published books in different genres including personal narrative, fiction, informational, fables and fairytales, procedural, persuasive, opinion, and poetry. Writing lessons move slowly and deliberately, building up skills alongside their phonics and language lessons to connect learning across the literacy continuum.

Handwriting

Learners will work through a developmentally sequenced, explicit handwriting scope and sequence that will teach proper pathways for all uppercase and lowercase letters as well as numbers.

Project Based Learning

Complete unit guides walk your learners through deep dives into topics that are meaningful to them and help them connect to their learning, their community, and the world around them. PBL units integrate all content areas and also focus on science and social studies topics as well as integrating art, STEM, and social emotional learning.

Do I need your other courses or curriculums with this membership?

Our other courses such as Raising Little Readers®, Pencil Pathways™, Good at Math™, and Scribbles to Stories® are stand alone curriculums that are excellent companions to this membership. This membership lays out what you are teaching and when, but it is not a daily scripted membership. There is flexibility in how you deliver the content. If you want to be able to use the membership to have your planning done for you and then also have scripted lessons to grab and go, I encourage you to add on one or more of our scripted curriculums and courses to get the most out of your kindergarten year!
