Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
The Little Red Hen by Paul Galdone
This week, students will read and explore The Little Red Hen by Paul Galdone as they follow the hen’s hard work to grow, prepare, and bake bread while the other animals refuse to help. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on retelling the story and identifying the theme by examining the characters’ actions and the lessons those actions teach. Learners will build an understanding of responsibility, fairness, and the value of helping others while exploring how characters’ choices shape the outcome of the story. Students will also read The Clever Monkey by Ron Cleveland and Baird Hoffmire as a connected text, comparing the lessons taught through animal characters and how their actions reveal important messages about behavior and consequences.
