Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae
This week, students will read and explore Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae as they follow Gerald’s journey of wanting to fit in and discovering his own unique way to shine. Through discussion, vocabulary development, and close rereading, students will focus on using clues from the text and illustrations to infer how Gerald is feeling at different points in the story and how his feelings change from beginning to end. Learners will identify the theme by examining Gerald’s challenges and growth, exploring messages about perseverance, confidence, and believing in yourself. Students will also read Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell as a connected text, comparing how both characters overcome self-doubt and learn to embrace what makes them unique.
