This week, students will read and explore I’m New Here by Anne Sibley O’Brien as they follow three students adjusting to life in a new country and learning how to navigate unfamiliar languages, routines, and friendships. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on making connections and identifying how characters change over time as they gain confidence and understanding. Learners will explore themes of empathy, perseverance, and inclusion while recognizing the importance of kindness when someone is experiencing something new. Students will also read A New Kind of Wild by Zara Gonzalez Hoang as a connected text, comparing how both stories show characters adapting to new environments and finding where they belong.

Each Belonging in Books unit is built around a high-quality read-aloud and carefully designed to:
