Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Knight Owl by Christopher Denise
This week, students will read and explore Knight Owl by Christopher Denise as they follow a small owl who dreams of becoming a knight and must use courage and clever thinking to face a real challenge. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on making predictions using clues from the text and illustrations and explaining their thinking using evidence from the story. Learners will practice retelling the story in order using key details from the beginning, middle, and end, while exploring themes of bravery, perseverance, and believing in yourself even when something feels difficult. Students will also read The Lion Inside by Rachel Bright and Jim Field as a connected text, comparing how both characters learn to find courage and grow through their experiences.
