Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig
This week, students will read and explore Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig as they follow Sylvester’s experience of making a wish without thinking and facing the unexpected consequences of his choice. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will practice asking and answering questions to better understand the characters, identify the story’s problem and solution, and examine how Sylvester and his parents each experience the problem from different points of view. Learners will build empathy and self-awareness while exploring themes of decision-making, consequences, and the importance of family and belonging. Students will also read The Three Wishes by Andrew Prentice as a connected text, comparing how characters in both stories make wishes and learning how their choices lead to different outcomes and lessons.
