Belonging in Books | PreK–2nd Reading Comprehension Curriculum for Close Read and Read-Alouds
If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to bring purposeful comprehension instruction into your PreK–2 classroom or homeschool, this resource is for you! Part of the Belonging in Books curriculum, this unit supports deep thinking, joyful reading, and inclusive discussion using a powerful anchor text:
The Librarian of Basra by Jeanette Winter
This week, students will read and explore The Librarian of Basra by Jeanette Winter as they learn about Alia Muhammad Baker’s efforts to protect books during a time of war. Through discussion, vocabulary, and story analysis, students will focus on visualizing events in the text and identifying how the main character changes throughout the story. Learners will explore themes of bravery, leadership, and protecting what is precious. Students will also read The Library Bus by Bahram Rahman as a connected text, comparing how both stories show how one person can make a powerful difference in a community.
